Christmas Shopping: Be an Early Bird

Last minute Christmas shopping can be very stressful, and it can also be very difficult finding exactly the right gifts for everyone on your list. An added stress is the size of the credit card debt you could be building up, which you will have to fact in the new year, because most of your Christmas shopping was done in December. The answer to these problems is to do your Christmas shopping early.

There are lots of advantages to getting your Christmas shopping done early. Firstly, you don’t have to do battle with all the Christmas shopping crowds, because loads of other people are trying to get their Christmas shopping done at the last minute as well. Early Christmas shopping, on the other hand, allows you to go at a more relaxed pace, and once done you can then focus on other Christmas tasks such as gift wrapping, decorations, baking and having time to spend with your family. There are also financial advantages to be gained.

So how do you get your Christmas shopping done early? One answer is to do it all year through. Once Christmas is over, sit down and make a list for the following Christmas season, and maybe note some gift ideas you might already have. Now you have a whole year ahead of you to look for the perfect gift for each of those people. Some of these items might be hard to find, and this gives you plenty of time to locate them, as well as a greater likelihood of being lucky enough to get them when they are on sale, and hence saving money.

If you are going to take this approach to early Christmas shopping, then you will have to carry your gift list with you all the time, perhaps in your wallet. After all you always have your wallet with you when you are shopping. You also need to ensure that you keep the list updated, and cross people’s names off when you have bought their gift. That way you won’t double up and buy another gift for someone because you forgot you’d already done it.

Although there are clear advantages to be gained from doing your Christmas shopping early, there are some disadvantages too. For one thing, you are more budget conscious when you do your Christmas shopping at the last minute, because you are aware of the expense that the season brings. Christmas shopping all through the year can mean that you lose track of how much you are spending, as well. So you need to counteract this by planning a budget for your gifts, deciding in advance how much you are going to spend on each of the people on your list, and keep track of your spending, being sure not to go over your limit.
